Why do we kill people who kill people, to teach them that killing is wrong?

I'm not saying it makes sense, but it probably satisifies some people to know that the person who killed someone they love is now dead; it's about "giving people what they deserve". Of course, this is just my train of thought in the past 5 minutes, but that's the whole point of saying "discuss" as opposed to "state your profound insight."
